Low self-esteem simply means “the negative feelings you have towards or about yourself. The inferiority complex in you”.

When you begin to feel bad about yourself, that you are not qualified to do certain things because of one irrelevant personal reason or the other or when you feel inferior when dealing or interacting with other people, you are suffering from low self-esteem.

Low self-esteem is one of the obstacles to greatness because you will always feel like you are not qualified or that you are inferior to do certain things.

When you begin to exalt people or have a high view of others more than its suppose to be, you are facing the problem of low self-esteem.
Low self-esteem is what everyone needs to conquer in order to be at the top in all our endeavours.

Why do you feel bad about yourself? Is it because of your family background? Your past experiences? The failure you experienced in the past or your present situation. One thing we should all know and understand is that, we are unique and specially made not minding your present situation.

A times those people you think are better than you may not even have half of what you have in you. The person you wish you are like may not even be at the same level with you if you understand who you are. So why comparing yourself with others or wishing you were like them.

Here are the signs connected with low self-esteem:

When you don’t know your worth, you begin to feel bad and inferior. Whenever you lack confidence in yourself, you no longer believe that you can do anything, you are suffering from low self-esteem.

Imitating, trying and wishing to be someone else:

It is very pathetic that the person you wish you are like may not even be thinking the same thing. You wish you are that young man over there that owns lots of car, houses, etc.  You imagine yourself being  the husband of that beautiful lady or the wife of that wealthy man because you married a man who is not wealthy.

Low self-esteem makes one to remain in the state of ‘I wish’.

Criticizing others:

Low self-esteem makes you feel bad about yourself and others. You no longer see good things in people.

Criticism is one of the canker worm eating up those suffering from low self-esteem. When you begin to criticize people just because they did what you were unable to do, you are suffering from low self-esteem.

Saying ‘yes’ when you mean ‘no’:

This particular one sounds funny because almost everyone is guilty of this most of the time because of the situation or environment we find ourselves at that moment.

Being assertive is very necessary in our relationship with people. Saying ‘yes’ when you mean ‘no’ most of the time is as a result of low self-esteem.

Depression, fear and poor Communication:

You may be asking ‘how does depression concerns low self-esteem?


One who is suffering from low self-esteem is always depressed and sad because of what he/she is passing through. You will not feel free to join group conversation only because you are afraid of saying the wrong thing and be questioned or to say something or raise a point that may not be accepted.

Now we shall look into this three points on how to deal with low self-esteem.

  • Appreciate your work, self and effort:

 No matter how little what you achieved is, always appreciate it. When you learn to appreciate yourself, you will begin to realize or know your worth.

  • Develop yourself: 

  Developing yourself is one of the most important things to do in order to deal with low self-esteem. Those areas of your life you feel like you are inadequate or unqualified, it is time to look into it and develop them.

  • Believe in yourself:

self-confidence is very important if you must deal with low self-esteem. Believe you can do whatever you want to do and always remember that “ All things are possible to them that believe”.
